Growth

Make the business growable first.

Growth can make a business feel worse before better.

New Zealand runs on small business.

MBIE puts small businesses at around 97% of enterprises and about 42% of economic value.

So, SME growth matters. But not every business is ready for it.

More sales can expose weak systems, thin margins, tight cashflow, unclear roles and delivery problems.

That's why growth can make a business feel worse before it feels better. You win the work, then scramble to deliver it, and the cracks start to show.

Often the business is trying to grow before it's genuinely growable.

Before you push for more sales, check the basics.

Can we deliver more volume? Hold quality? Fund the work? Can the team cope without the owner becoming the bottleneck?

If the answer is shaky, strengthen that first. It's cheaper than fixing it under pressure later.

This is not a reason to avoid growth. It is a reason to prepare for it.

Fixing a weak system while you are slammed is one of the hardest ways to do it.

A growable business turns opportunity into progress instead of pressure.

Growth is a test of the whole business.

If the business model is weak, growth adds strain. If the systems are weak, growth adds mistakes. If cashflow is weak, growth adds pressure.

Businesses that scale well usually have enough of the foundations in place before they push hard for more volume.

The aim is to strengthen those foundations so the growth you work for actually sticks.
